Few corners of the Mosaic were as convivial as the Crow Road Inn.

Word spread fast through the factory floors whenever Bessie Bogan’s feathered hut was seen soaring overhead, workers buzzing until shift’s end when, for but a couple pence, the inn’s tap would pour them a pint, and the stove would serve up a warm, hearty bowl of cow heel soup and a soursop sandwich. Her familiars conversed with regulars eagerly over the day’s gossip —who drowned in the river last Friday, what stranger appeared from the forsaken furnishing shop on Egbert Lane, or why Bessie’s dust pan ran away again— all while six-stringed fiddles, washboards and spoons played themselves to Bessie’s ballads: raunchy old tunes so jovial it made the most miserable wretches two-step on the tavern tables.

This, of course, would never do for the Proctors; gossip, music, and soursop sandwiches were antithetical to Progress, and should any of their workers be caught in a place so morally destitute, they would be cast from their living quarters to the river bank, fated to become gossip at the next gathering. But folks never stayed away for long, and if the Proctors hated anything more than indolence, it was waste. So one night, hired ruffians lurked in the shadows 'til no one was looking, and patrons were boisterous with drink. Then they hacked and sawed and snapped the wings off the Crow Road Inn.

The wingless hut sat still the next morning, helpless prey to the Proctors’ greatest weapon: the local food inspector, who wished to shutter the inn over Bessie’s lack of a license. As the inspector appeared, chains in hand, however, the old hut began to shake. The inky blue feathers of its thatched roof rustled, its timber walls rattled and groaned, and the inspector watched as it rose up on creaky crow legs. To his surprise, and utter distress, the Crow Road Inn wandered away.

Bessie came back from time to time, entertaining old patrons and friends, but her ballads were never as lively, and the sandwiches were never quite the same.
