An introduction to the Department of Purgatorial Spaces.

The Department of Purgatorial Spaces (DoPS) is a Foundation department created for the entrapment, exploration, and analysis of the human consciousness. This is done by forcefully rearranging a living organism's psyche, changing their perception of reality. A purgatorial space, by definition, is an emulated metaphysical space inserted into one's consciousness; allowing them to roam through a Foundation-made scenario, location, or event all within the confines of their own mind.

There are three types of Purgatorial Spaces, those being memory-based, afterlife-based and labyrinthal-based.
* A memory-based purgatorial space is a finite plane, manifesting itself in the form of one's memory. (As seen in SCP-8177)
* An afterlife-based purgatorial space, as the name implies, is a purgatorial space which typically becomes accessible to individuals after death (As seen in SCP-8027).
* A labyrinthal-based purgatorial space is an infinite area, manifesting itself as programmed by the foundation. (As seen in You Can Check Out Any Time You Like)

Founded in 2022 for Department-con, the Department of Purgatorial Spaces acts as a general template for any anomalies pertaining to Purgatory, Consciousness, and Memory.

While we are a small department, we welcome both old and new authors alike to explore their consciousness and create their very own story using this department. While there is no set canon, it is important to note that the department is run by Director J. Wältschzen, and their assistant Bashir Schippir.

With your contribution, we may be able to grow this small, niche, and nearly forgotten department into something that inspires people to contribute more to the site. But also, even just reading our stories is a major contribution on its own!

This is an incredibly easy department to read and write for; so there are very few requirements to actually contribute.

**In order to contribute, you must do the following:**
* Write something relating to a purgatorial space.
* Mention the department by name at least once (Footnotes are acceptable).
* Additionally, it is recommended you read either Anti-Oedipus or any Jungian/Freudian Primer.

**In order to be added to this hub, you must meet the following requirement(s):**
* +10 votes on your Dept. of Purgatorial Spaces related work.

**Other:**
* Articles written for the Department of Purgatorial Spaces often act as a means to explore the human psyche, the futility of torture, and deep emotional conflicts. While these themes are purely optional, it is recommended you use them as a guide.

* Try to be consistent with other articles using the Department. While there is no canon, it would be a bit weird if your main character woke up in "happiness ice cream flower world".

+ Purgatorial Terms
“Purgatorial Space”
* A space in which the human consciousness is forcefully inserted and left to roam. These can take many forms, but most commonly take the shape of an area / place the individual within would recognize.

“(NAME) Type Purgatorial Space:”
* The presumed type of purgatory being used at any given moment. These have no real naming convention, but it is recommended they are relatively simple and fit your narrative (EX: Eden-Mind Type Purgatorial Space).

+ Transcription Terms
“Generated O-EEG Transcript”
* The **automatically generated** transcription of subjects and their actions whilst inside a purgatorial space, done via analyzation of REM activity.

“Athena.AIC”
* A transcription tool that **manually generates** transcripts of subjects and their actions whilst inside a purgatorial space, done via interpreting neurological & physical activity (such as heartrate, brain stimulation pulses, etc).

+ General Terms

“Inscriptions”
* Markings engraved onto hard surfaces, which are often found within purgatorial spaces. They can act as warnings, guides, or path markers.

“Spatial Shift”
* A change in spatial relationships, physics, or logic.

“Consciousness”
* The state of being ‘awake’ and aware of one's surroundings.
