"upsilon two-x double nine") is a fifteen episode OAV created by Studio Metolow and produced by Youmex. The name is often shortened by fans to Ipsy99 or Y2x99 (we prefer the latter). It originally started out as a serialized story written by SF novelist Sohji Kirishima in the in August 1996 issue of Newtype magazine. From there, it was adapted by Metolow, whose co-creator Kosuke Ichinose served as its director. The first episode was released in September 1997 and finally concluded on December 1999. Despite some changes made to the characters and the story for the OAV, the premise remains largely the same. It is set sometime in the future -- the eponymous '2X99' -- after Earth's population has undergone a mass exodus to live in a gargantuan space elevator-like structure. All the while, strange parascientific phenomena affect its inhabitants to varying degrees. Construction and upkeep are ostensibly run by a mysterious organization called the Foundation, but their true motivations are unknown or potentially even sinister for humanity at large. Y2x99 was a semi-successful commercial endeavor but largely overshadowed by later hits such as //Neon Genesis Evangelion// or considered inferior to similar stories such as //Blame!//. However, it is still popular and given due acclaim in the right circles.
