You remove the meal from its cardboard sleeve. You raise the knife and stab down repeatedly, piercing the film. 

You read a news article recently that microwaving food within plastic containers increased your risk of cancer. The radiation results in carcinogenic chemicals -- dioxins, you think they were called -- leeching into your food. 

You place the container into the microwave and set the time. 

You turn on the television, load a streaming service. It takes you a minute to choose which. Your eyes glance to the VHS player. 

No.

You're not going back there. You're not doing it again. You're not watching her die. You can't bear the weight of another failure.

The microwave dings. You retrieve your meal. 

It is adequate.

You eat it on the sofa, whilst deciding what show or movie to watch. By the time you have finished the food, you have yet to make a decision. 

You go to bed.
