+++ Nico's Year In Review

Wouldn't you believe it, it's that time of the year again. We've had a lot of good times in the last twelve months, a good handful of contests and some banger posts! But now is the the time for us to look back on the year and highlight some exceptional writing! Let's dive right in, shall we?

= __January__
[[[rounderhouse-bone-proposal|BONE PROPOSAL]]] came out only a year ago, and yet it feels like so much time has passed by. This is Rounderhouse firing on all cylinders, weaving history, culture, dialogue, and character as well as a believable romance through a xenofiction lens. I realize this is like saying "have you ever heard of cult indie band //Pink Floyd//," but it is really that good and I cannot recommend it enough.

= __February__
[[[every-day-it-gets-easier|Every Day, It Gets a Little Easier]]] is a bleak little story about what happens to someone in the Foundation after a tragedy, written by absolute newcomer OnlineOpossum. I may be a little biased because I had the pleasure of critiquing this one, but it very accurately goes through grief and the feeling that something is not quite right the entire time. 

= __March__
[[[MOBY DICK]]] by IndustryStandard is a particular standout from the Public Domain Contest of 2025. It is written in the style of Herman Melville with a slightly homoerotic and SCP-ish (though really, that is a bit of an oxymoron) twist and is oozing with metaphor and atmosphere. If one hasn't read the original Moby Dick, this will likely hit a little less hard, but it is still a worthy read.

[[[for Brandon]]] is the single most heartbreakingly relatable and human piece of fiction I have ever read on this site. I didn't know who its author, theChunk was before, but now I look forward to seeing them post. It's here, it's queer, and it made me shed a tear.

= __May__
[[[SCP-8905]]] is incredibly stupid. Its authors, CrowCat and PinkHatPinkJeans, should be ashamed of themselves. That being said, its punchline is incredibly good. I won't spoil it for you, and its relatively short, so I suggest reading it.

= __June__
[[[worthy-of-being-loved|We're Worthy of Being Loved, Too]]] is a beautiful, dreamlike, Cormac McArthy-esque knockout of a queer fiction tale. When I say that writing dreamlike prose is difficult, Tscercele comes along and makes it seem so easy. This is a must-read if you are at all interested in the abstract and unusual.

= __July__
[[[SCP-8382]]] by HarryBlank is a novel-length (though at this point, if Harry's involved, when isn't it?) article about the one and only Dr. Lillian Lillihammer as she goes on a tear through the weird and wonderful world of memetics. In typical Harry fashion, its oozing charm, personality, and wit. Though be advised, like I said, it is quite lengthy.

= __August__
[[[SCP-1229]]] is an interesting little puzzle box with boundless interpretations, purposefully crafted as such by its author Dysadron. It may seem simple and straightforward at first, but the article belies a deep discomfort and sense of dread that inspires a second read. I couldn't stop thinking about it when I first read it, and neither will you!

[[[SCP-9090]]] by Its A Bad Idea is such a wonderfully bizarre article that forces the reader to engage with it on its own outlandish, creepy, and unusual terms. Words fail me at describing it, and its really one of those things that is better experienced than heard about, so go read it!

= __October__
[[[SCP-9777]]] by Karatth and AnAnomalousWriter is a very ambitious piece, blending tons of visual arts, anime tropes and culture, and a love of genre fiction, all tied up with a neat bow. I highly recommend reading it and enjoying the artistry that went into it. Some parts may suffer due to translation; both authors are ESL, but that doesn't mean it's not worth reading.

[[[theoldmasters|The Old Masters]]] by TacticalNecromancy is a lovely little piece of fiction taking place in a creepy old museum and starring a character who is at odds with both their coworker and their mother. It's a great premiere piece by a first time author, which just barely missed his self-imposed deadline for Halloween. Consider giving it a look!

[[[fuck-jude|Fuck Jude!!!]]] by sailorenoch is a dating sim starring Jude Kriyot and the lovable cast of characters of Gamers Against Weed, as well as some new pervert who I won't spoil. It's really funny, it was made in //a single month// for Art Exchange as a present to kinchtheknifeblade! Its impressive just how much one can do in so little, and with so much love as well.

Hello all, I’m [[*user milky__doodles]], and rather confusingly, this month's creature feature is my elderly cat - Milky (she inspires my username)

Milky is a 17-year-old Bombay rescue cat. She was found in 2008 by the RSPCA after being thrown out in a rubbish bag with her newborn siblings. Despite a rough start to her life, she is and continues to be a bright, adventurous, and affectionate cat who loves basking in the sun and enjoys white fish as a treat. We believe she was the runt of her litter as she is one of the smallest fully-grown cats I’ve ever seen.

I was 3 when my family adopted Milky, and my parents entrusted me with naming her. Judith Kerr’s “Mog the Forgetful Cat” was my favourite childhood story, and I chose the name Milky as Mog (and I imagined other cats) loved to drink milk. Although she chose to embrace her namesake, finishing off the milk from my cereal, the irony of her name contrasting with pitch black fur was not lost on me as I grew up.

Remarkably, Milky avoided injury or illness for the majority of her life. Unfortunately, in late 2023, Milky suffered a bleed in one of her eyes. She rejected food and water, became reclusive, and multiple vet visits later, she was diagnosed with hypertension. She suffered a second bleed in early 2024, however, with regular medication and a stricter diet, she was soon back to her lovely self.

She is a lot more vocal as an old lady, we believe she may have some cognitive issues at such an old age, but she continues to live a relaxed and peaceful life, full of enrichment and cuddles. I moved out of my parents' house in 2024 and Milky continues to live with them. She is the #1 thing I miss about home, but I am blessed to receive regular updates in the form of pictures, videos and Facetimes.

Due to staffing issues, the data section of the new was cut back in March of last year, to many peoples chagrin. But many hands make lighter work and community outreach has gotten more hands! All this is to say that we've now got all the data you would've gotten over last years news right here, right now! Special thanks to [[*user BAD_DATA]] (latest data analysis team member), [[*user radian628]] (for helping navigate Crom and write scripts), and [[*user smlt]] (for developing and maintain Crom) for allowing this to happen.

Hello from the data analysis team!
Looking at 2025, a lot of articles were created, an incredibly busy year all round. Two contests in particular, Classic con in the summer and 9kcon in the autumn are to thank for such an increase in articles posted. Here are a few takeaway points:
* Outside of contests for mainlist SCP articles, tales and mainlisters are generally uploaded at pretty even rates. If we are to take upvotes as a metric for engagement, SCP articles generally tend to perform slightly better, but not by as drastic an amount as people may think. Future analysis should account for outliers from contests.
* GoI formats are a heavily underrepresented form of article, taking up a very small slice of the pie each month. Future analysis should perhaps take which type of GoI formats are popular with authors
* All data was obtained via Crom at the end of the year, so the month-by-month analysis is in retrospect. Next year, hopefully we can go back to gathering data on a monthly basis to get data that is more representative of the time.

The highest rated article this year was, of course, [[[scp-9000 |"SCP-9000 — The Trench"]]] by [[*user J Dune]] at +952, more than 300 upvotes than the next most popular article. Congratulations!
For the other big formats:
* The highest rated tale was [[[fandation |"Fandation"]]], a collaboration by [[*user SynthPanda\_]], [[*user sailorenoch]], [[*user Prismal]], [[*user Miss Lapis]], [[*user Harmacy]], [[*user Guaire]], [[*user FrankEntropy]], [[*user Fish^12]], [[*user DrBleep]], [[*user Astersquill]], & [[*user Alexander245]] at +250.
* The highest rated GoI format was the Wilsons' Wildlife article [[[critter-profile-pothole |"Critter Profile: Pothole!"]]] by [[*user Queerious]] at +123.
* The highest rated artwork was [[[art:9kcon-boss-fight |"9kcon Boss Fight"]]] by [[*user Dr Talcite]] at +103

In total, this year we had 2076 pages uploaded, with a cumulative vote count of +84329, with the average article getting +41 votes. Out of all those, 70 were author pages, so hello to all of our new authors who have contributed so much in 2025!
