The towering cluster of metal pipes appeared in the park without explanation, belching dark fumes into the clear yellow sky and clattering with each thunderous step. It plodded through clearings and meandered down walkways, munching cheerfully on trash cans and benches to the bewilderment of pigeons and panhandlers alike. Liverwort Hill had never been quiet, but the beast's hissing and clanging and crunching echoed ceaselessly through the streets, an ominous call to action which no resident dared to answer, and no warden felt like dealing with.

When the city guards deigned to perform their civic duties, the beast avoided them handily, glancing back with a playful curiosity as they chased it around barren trees and through patches of dirt and brown grass. It froze mid-frolic around a half-eaten picnic table, and the guards watched, astonished, as it retched up a perfect steel beam with a plume of soot and a satisfied burp.

From that moment on, Liverwort Hill belonged to the beast.

Vagrants were hired to gather the growing clutter of expelled steel, and the new hires learned to move quickly as to not be trampled, or consumed, as its food sources dwindled. The city diverted its refuse to the park and the metal beast feasted on its new bounty, slower now, but pleased nonetheless.

Money flowed freely to the council office, and contracts were signed by greasy-palmed men. The steel flowed out to all sorts of places: from the spire that topped the Gizzen Cathedral, to the intricate archways of the Pearl Estates, to the ever-expanding Tower of Bridges. Though the neighborhood grew rank with noise and stench, residents were assured good fortune would come; Liverwort Hill transformed into the wasteyard of the Mosaic, but as long as the metal beast coughed up its steel, the promise of prosperity lived on.

And so, when the metal beast breathed its last contented sigh, the contracts died with it. Hope vanished along with the money, but the mountain of refuse remained, an untouched offering at the feet of the corpse of the beast of Liverwort Hill.
